What each ingredient does

Peaches
Provide the fruit body and flavor, softening in the syrup to become tender.
Sugar
Adds sweetness and helps preserve the fruit in the syrup.
Vinegar
Adds acidity that gives the pickle its tangy flavor and helps preserve the fruit.

The step that matters

Adding peaches to the syrup. Adding too many peaches at once drops the syrup's temperature and can leave fruit unevenly cooked. Adding them a few at a time keeps the syrup boiling so each peach softens evenly.

Swap the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (peach, sugar, vinegar):

  1. Cinnamonfits better
  2. Peppermintfits better
  3. Gingerfits about as well
  4. Clovethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against peach, sugar, vinegar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
