Ribbon Cake

Oven, in the book's wordsA hot oven

Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a hot oven”. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure. The book gives no cooking times; the times in the steps were added in transcription, so check for doneness rather than trusting the clock.

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. In a bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

  3. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.

  4. In a separate bowl, combine the flour and baking powder.

  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.

  6. Divide the batter into three parts.

  7. To one part, add the raisins, cloves, currants, nutmeg, and cinnamon.

  8. Pour the mixtures into prepared cake pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
