Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Oysters
Provide the main flavor and tender texture when cooked until plump.
Butter
Adds richness and a silky mouthfeel to the stew.
Milk
Forms the creamy body of the stew.
Celery
Infuses the scalded milk with a mild, aromatic flavor.

The step that matters

Cook the oysters until plump and gills curl. Oysters overcook quickly and turn rubbery when held too long over heat. Stopping once the edges curl and they plump keeps them tender.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (oyster, butter, milk, pepper):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Nutmegfits about as well
  3. Cinnamonfits about as well
  4. Celerythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against oyster, butter, milk, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
