Why it works: Allspice and biscuit share more aroma than cooks usually use. They rank in the top 10% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 59 recipes. Both carry coumarin, which smells sweet, hay. The science ↓

Pot Apple Pie

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Place sliced sour apples in a clean iron pot and add enough water to cover them.

  2. Stew the apples gently until slightly softened.

  3. Add molasses and allspice to the pot.

  4. Roll out biscuit dough to cover the top of the apples and place it on top.

  5. Cover the pot tightly and let it boil gently for 30 to 40 minutes, depending on the thickness of the crust.
