Excellent Cinnamon Rolls

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare the rolls

  1. Roll out the light bread dough to 1 inch thick.

  2. Spread the dough with butter.

  3. Sprinkle white sugar and powdered cinnamon over the butter.

  4. Roll the dough up tightly and cut into 1-inch pieces.

  5. Place the pieces in a buttered pan.

Rise and bake

  1. Let the rolls rise until doubled in size.

  2. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) until golden.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Light bread dough
Forms the soft, airy structure that rises and holds the spiral filling.
Butter
Adds richness and moisture, and helps the rolls brown in the oven.
White sugar
Adds sweetness and helps the surface caramelize and brown during baking.
Powdered cinnamon
Provides the warm, aromatic flavour of the filling.

The step that matters

Rolling the dough up tightly. A tight, even roll keeps the filling inside the spirals and gives consistent layers. Loose rolling lets sugar and cinnamon spill out and leaves gaps in the swirl.
