Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Green peas
Form the body of the soup, giving it its main flavour and thick texture once mashed and strained.
Milk
Adds creaminess and softens the flavour of the soup.
Butter
Adds fat for richness and a smoother mouthfeel.

The step that matters

Rub the mixture through a wire strainer. Pushing the cooked peas through a fine strainer breaks down the fibrous skins and leaves a smooth, even texture. Skipping or rushing this step leaves the soup grainy.

Swap the peas

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (milk, butter, pepper):

  1. Cocoafits better
  2. Walnutfits better
  3. Lima beansfits about as well
  4. Peasthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against milk, butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
