Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Bind the mixture and help it set firmly as it cooks.
Bread crumbs
Provide the body and structure of the pudding.
Beef marrow or suet
Adds richness and moisture, keeping the pudding tender.
Loaf sugar
Adds sweetness to the pudding.

The step that matters

Boil rapidly for 3.5 hours. The pudding must stay in fast-boiling water for the full time so the eggs and crumbs set through. Water that drops to a gentle simmer can leave the centre loose and wet.
