Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Rice
Forms the pudding's base, setting into a soft, thick body when cooked and combined with cream.
Cream
Adds richness and moisture, making the rice mixture smooth and somewhat stiff.
Apricots, apples, or peaches
Provide the fruit flavor and soft texture of the stewed layer on top.

The step that matters

Stew the fruit until soft. Fruit stewed in syrup softens and releases its flavor gradually; undercooked fruit stays firm and tastes sharp, while overcooking turns it mushy and loses its shape.

Swap the apricot

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (rice, cream, syrup, peach):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Apricotthe original
  3. Raspberryfits about as well
  4. Strawberryfits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against rice, cream, syrup, peach. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
