What each ingredient does

Eggs
Bind the batter and help the pudding set firm as it cooks.
Bread crumbs
Soak up the milk to give the pudding its body and soft crumb.
Suet
Adds fat that keeps the pudding moist and rich as it steams.
Dried figs
Provide the main fruit flavour and sweetness, with chewy texture throughout.
Flour
Adds structure so the batter holds together after steaming.

The step that matters

Keeping the molds upright in the boiling water. If the molds tip, water can enter and the pudding may become waterlogged or cook unevenly. A weight on the lid keeps the molds stable through the long steam.
