What each ingredient does

Grated bread crumbs
Form the bulk of the pudding and soak up moisture as it bakes.
Butter
Adds richness and helps the crumbs brown as they bake.
Apples
Provide moisture, tartness and soft fruit texture through the layers.
Sugar
Adds sweetness and helps the top caramelise and brown.
Nutmeg
Adds warm aromatic spice that complements the apples.
