What each ingredient does

Apples
Form the body of the dish, softening as they cook inside the rice wrap.
Rice
Forms an outer wrap that cooks into a starchy coating around each apple.
Sugar
Adds sweetness to the cooked apple.
Butter
Adds richness and fat to the finished apples.

The step that matters

Tying the cloths tightly. The rice must stay packed around each apple during the long boil. Loose cloths let the rice spread or wash away, leaving the apple exposed to the water.

Swap the apple

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (clove, lemon, rice, nutmeg, butter, sugar):

  1. Orangefits better
  2. Vanillafits better
  3. Coconutfits better
  4. Applethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against clove, lemon, rice, nutmeg, butter, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
