Barley Fruit Cake

Oven, in the book's wordsA moderate oven

Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a moderate oven”. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Cream the shortening and sugar together.

  3. Add the milk and molasses to the creamed mixture.

  4. Sift together the dry ingredients and add them alternately with the milk to the creamed mixture.

  5. Lightly fold in the prepared fruit.

  6. Pour the batter into a loaf pan and bake for 45 minutes.
