Form the balls

  1. Form leftover mashed potatoes into small round patties in your palm.

  2. Place a spoonful of seasoned peas, chopped meat, or cheese on each patty and shape into a ball.

Coat and fry

  1. Dip each ball into the beaten egg, then roll in cracker crumbs.

  2. Repeat the egg dip and crumb coating for a thicker crust.

  3. Fry the balls in hot oil until golden brown.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Leftover mashed potatoes
Forms the soft interior that holds the filling inside each ball.
Beaten egg
Acts as a binder so the cracker crumbs stick to the outside of each ball.
Finely rolled cracker crumbs
Form the crisp coating that browns when the balls are fried.

The step that matters

Frying in hot oil. If the oil is not hot enough, the coating absorbs oil and turns greasy instead of crisp and golden. Hot oil sets the crumb crust quickly so the balls hold their shape.

Swap the potato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (peas, meat, egg):
