Cinnamon Rolls

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare the dough

  1. Prepare white bread dough for one loaf and let it rise.

  2. On a floured surface, roll the dough into a strip twice as long as it is wide and about ⅓ inch thick.

Fill and shape

  1. Spread the dough lightly with softened butter.

  2. Sprinkle the sugar and cinnamon mixture evenly over the dough.

  3. Scatter the washed currants over the dough.

  4. Roll the dough like a jelly roll and cut into 1-inch thick slices.

Bake

  1. Place the slices in a greased pan, adding a small lump of butter on top of each roll.

  2. Let the rolls rise until doubled in size.

  3. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 20 minutes.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

White bread dough
Provides the soft, airy structure that rises and holds the spiral shape.
Sugar
Adds sweetness and helps the filling caramelize and brown in the oven.
Cinnamon
Provides the warm, aromatic flavour of the filling.
Currants
Add sweet, chewy bursts of fruit throughout the rolls.
Butter
Adds richness and moisture, and melts to help the rolls brown.

The step that matters

Letting the rolls rise until doubled. Yeast dough needs enough time to expand fully before baking; under-proofed rolls stay dense, while the rise sets the light, open crumb.

Swap the currant

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (bread, sugar, cinnamon, butter):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Figfits better
  3. Raisinfits better
  4. Currantthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against bread, sugar, cinnamon, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
