Why it works: Flour and raisin match in chemistry and in kitchens. They rank in the top 1% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 9,075 recipes. Both carry isobutyraldehyde, which smells malty, green. The science ↓

Directions
The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Line a loaf cake pan with two layers of parchment paper on the bottom and sides.
Wash and dry the currants thoroughly.
Mix the bicarbonate of soda with 1 tablespoon of warm water.
Beat the butter until creamy, then gradually add the sugar while beating constantly.
Separate the eggs and beat the yolks until thick, then add them to the butter and sugar mixture and beat well.
Pour in the sweet cider.
Take 2 to 3 tablespoons of flour and mix it with the currants and chopped raisins.
Add the spices to the remaining flour and sift it into the batter.
Transcribed from a scanned cookbook and modernised for today's kitchens. Where the book gave no heat or time, or said "a moderate oven", the temperatures and times here may be modern equivalents rather than the book's own figures.
