Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. In a bowl, cream together 1 cup sugar and ½ cup butter for the light part.

  3. Add ½ cup milk and 3 egg whites, mixing well.

  4. Stir in 2 cups flour and 1½ teaspoons baking powder until smooth.

  5. In another bowl, mix ½ cup brown sugar, ½ cup molasses, ¼ cup butter, and ¼ cup milk for the dark part.

  6. Add 2 cups flour, 3 egg yolks, 1½ teaspoons baking powder, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon cloves, mixing until combined.

  7. Line the bottom of a loaf pan with greased paper.

  8. Pour the light and dark mixtures into the pan alternately.
