Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Light bread dough
Provides the structure and chewy crumb that the rusk is built on.
Butter or lard
Adds fat that tenderizes the crumb and carries flavor.
Sugar
Adds sweetness and helps the crust brown during baking.

The step that matters

Letting the rounds rise before baking. Yeast needs the full hour to build gas and expand the dough; rising too little yields dense rusk, and the spacing of the balls sets whether they bake sweet and close or flat and separate.
