Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a slow oven”. The 300°F (150°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

  1. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C).

  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, molasses, and sugar.

  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time.

  4. In a separate bowl, mix the cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and flour.

  5. Dissolve the baking soda in the sour milk and add to the mixture.

  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until combined.

  7. Pour the batter into a greased baking pan.

  8. Bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
