Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. In a bowl, cream together 1 cup of butter and 3 cups of white sugar.

  3. Add 1 cup of sweet milk, 5 cups of flour, 1½ teaspoons of baking powder, and the egg whites. Mix well and flavor with lemon.

  4. In another bowl, cream together 1 cup of butter and 3 cups of brown sugar.

  5. Add 1 cup of molasses, 1 cup of sweet milk, 4 cups of flour, 3 teaspoons of baking powder, the egg yolks, and 1 whole egg. Mix well and flavor with cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.

  6. In prepared pans, alternate layers of the dark and white batter, starting with the dark batter and ending with the dark layer.

  7. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
